Animal Slaughter

Blood has flowed too long in our human race
How do we show our cruel and twisted face
For do we see animals go to war over land and sea?
For oil and other resources? No, they leave us be

In Britain three hundred and fifty thousand deer are culled
Because of over-breeding, other animals and human hearts cold
These majestic creatures killed without a care
Bred and brought in by man, so is this fair?

Wolves used to be the animal to control the deer
And in doing so, the whole eco system would adhere
But humans killed them here a few hundred years ago
Along with the bear, the human animal kills to gloat

Humans kill for greed and unnecessary need
Caring little for the land and wildlife they bleed
One day soon they’ll kill all in their wake
Then there’ll be nothing to kill or take

Animals have something to teach us all
If we listen to their wild call
For the wild is where we come from
And it’s a song that should never be forgotten

Animal slaughter should never be tolerated
When it’s for no real reason they’re exterminated
They have been on this earth for as long as we
Some longer, so we should leave them be

It’s us that over-breed with seven billion on this earth
Animals are not here for us to do with as we think we deserve
Turn the tables and should they hunt us down
As we continue to breed into their world

A balance needs to be found so we can all live in harmony
A peace to be had, a future for animals, and you and me
Then our kids, our grand-kids and theirs shall see
These creatures for real and not in books or screens

  1. The Native Americans and the wolves were brothers. They both hunted and killed only what was needed for their survival. Then came white man. Both of them became the hunted and almost became eradicated. Only a few survived. Really a powerful poem.

    1. Thank you Randall. Yeah, they were indeed. We used to have them here until the late 1700’s I think but as you just said, man kills what it doesn’t understand.
They’re my favourite animal. I’ve ‘walked’ with them here in a wildlife park and couldn’t believe the size of them and the grace and beauty they held themselves.
I’m doing a course in them January and hope to see them in the wild very soon. It would be a happy day indeed.
