The news has been crazy and varied these past few weeks what with the riots in London and the arrests, convictions and the inevitable outcry of ‘human rights’ that these people are meant to have. I believe in Human rights but if you commit a crime that does harm to another person in any way or their property then quite simply you should lose those rights for as long as you are in prison and have learned your lesson. If the criminal ever does because the victim will always live in fear of what has been done to them so why should the criminal get an easy ride by getting all the comforts of home in a weak prison service? At the end of the day we all have choices and if that choice is the wrong one then you have to walk that path and correct it and do the right thing or suffer the consequences.
But this isn’t the way things are nowadays as we live in a soft and political correct world gone mad where the criminal has more human rights than the victim.
A National Service of some kind is the only way to sort out most of our problems in the current climate we find ourselves in. Yes, it will cost a lot to set up and run something of that huge scale but it will pay out more as most of the workers will be those that have broken the law.
Let’s say for instance that someone has stolen from someone’s home. Should these people just be given an orange vest and told to clean the streets for a week or two then be let back into society as though nothing has happened? No, of course not. They should be punished and made to understand that this can never happen again. They should be given a form of community service in area’s that are needed the most where they will also learn their lesson. The punishment should fit the crime. For the more serious crimes like Rape and Murder, then life in prison should mean just that and they should never be allowed out again. They should lose the comforts of the outside world but still be made to be a use to society. This would be hard to put into practice but it’s an idea that should be thought of.
The ‘lesser’ crimes and the people that commit them should be treated as finding something as equally useful to the nation like the Army, Navy, Air-force, Police, Ambulance, Fire service as well as animal protection, the elderly, the sick, and so on and so forth. Maybe if they saw other people suffering, then they would learn from this and would be a use to society and be a better person for it.
If not, then prison for them until they had.
The British government handled all this wrong and have become the lapdog of Brussels and America jumping when told to do so by the greater power. Now though they are suffering the consequences of their own actions and weakness in the chaos they helped create, whether directly or indirectly is another debate for another time. The riots show how weak and not in control they really are. It’s a scary and sobering thought if this ever happens again on a grander scale.
This now brings me to the Middle east, the domino effect and what’s happening in Libya. I was at school when the first Gulf war was in the news and we were all worried about ‘Mad Dog’ Gaddafi and what he was capable of sending our way. Suddenly as quickly as it started, it was over and Gaddafi became our ‘friend.’
Now though they hunt him down and help get rid of him like they should have done in the beginning but they didn’t. Why? Oil of course. It’s all about that, so various governments turned a blind eye to the atrocities committed by Gaddafi’s regime for their own ends. How many lives have been sacrificed in the name of money and power that the black gold brings? Do these people rest easy who let this happen? I’m sure they do.Whatever happens out there, it will take some time to sort out a government, clean up the country, get everyone into work and put those on trial that were responsible for all the bad things that happened out there.
We over here in the West so often claim that we have it bad but try living in a country like that with a power hungry megalomaniac and then see how things really are.
I hope that the Middle East can be sorted out sooner rather than later but in reality it will take years to clean up to become the true democracies they so crave and need.
On a lighter note, there has been a few reports in the press about plastic bags being used across the UK and the damage they cause to the environment. There is so much fuss about what to do on this issue, a big deal being made of it, that it truly frustrates me. There is so much going on in the world that has more complex problems and no-one can decide what to do about plastic carrier bags.
It’s actually quite simple really. Put an outright ban on them across the entire United Kingdom and make people bring their own bags from home. If they wish to get a bag from the supermarket, then those environmentally friendly bags would do the trick for a small fee which should go directly to helping the environment of course.
This issue would be gone overnight but the government always dither over stupid things like this.
Sometimes the simple answers just stare you in the face. Why is this so hard to make law and why won’t they do it?
Revenue I expect. Greed always wins out over health, safety, welfare and the environment.
How many animals are killed each year because of our waste, let alone plastic bags?
Time I think for our government to start acting like one instead of the overpaid bumbling laughing stock they have become.
